           Mary Alyce Ann Bender, 71, of 
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;a href="https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/local/florida/clearwater" target="_blank"&gt;&#xD;
      
           Clearwater, Florida
          &#xD;
    &lt;/a&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           , passed away peacefully on January 6, 2025, in Carmel, Indiana, after a brief battle with cancer. She was born in Evergreen Park, Illinois, on August 4, 1953, the fourth of John and Rita (née McDonald) Nugent's eight children, and was raised on the South Side of Chicago. She went to Christ the King School and graduated from Mother McAuley High School in 1971. After living in Southern California for several years, she returned to Chicago to attend nursing school at Illinois Masonic.
           &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           She worked as a registered nurse at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago for 22 years and was a longtime resident of Riverside, Illinois. After living in Zionsville, Indiana, she moved to Clearwater in 2010. She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter Laura and siblings Maureen, Stephen, Mary Christine Murray, and Mary Patricia Pryor. She is survived by her children, Jacquelyn and Brandon, sisters Mary Ann (Matt) Schultheis and Mary Catherine Buckie, brother Michael (Joyce) Nugent, and many nieces and nephews.
           &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           A memorial service will be held on Friday, February 14, 2025, 11:00 a.m., at the First Presbyterian Church, 701 Beach Drive NE, St. Petersburg, Florida. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the 
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;a href="https://donate.cancer.org/?campaign=fcat" target="_blank"&gt;&#xD;
      
           American Cancer Society
          &#xD;
    &lt;/a&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           . Interment was private.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

           We wanted to inform you about ongoing work by the County on the Roosevelt Channel 5 project, which has begun making significant progress.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Starting today, several truckloads of equipment and materials are being delivered to the easement area on the west side of our community. Within the next day or two, the County will begin removing the weir at the end of the channel—a project originally scheduled to take place three years ago but delayed due to budget constraints.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
      
           Project Overview:
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           The removal process is expected to take approximately 10 days.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           A large amount of concrete will be hauled away during this time.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           The County will install 30-foot steel partitions to create a temporary dam across the canal in front of the weir. These partitions are driven into the canal using a hydraulic press and a vibrating impact hammer.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Once the partitions are in place, the water level behind them will rise, but not to a level that should cause concern.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           A bypass system will redirect water from the canal to a point beyond the weir.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           A similar setup is also being implemented further down the canal near Chick-fil-A, where a flood control gate will be installed.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
      
           Ground/Lawn Repairs:
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           At this time, it is unclear whether the County will be responsible for repairing any ground or lawn areas impacted by this work, as the location is a designated easement area. We will share updates if more information becomes available.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
